Advent on Gradina is one of the most elaborate Christmas markets in this part of Europe. Its last six iterations attracted 340,000 visitors and this year’s seventh edition will take place from 3 December to 6 January.
Every year kilometres of lights and unique decorations transform Rijeka’s Trsat Castle into a breathtaking Christmas fairy tale venue. Handcrafted light sculptures adorn every nook and cranny of the castle, while other highlights include the Trsat dragon studded with Christmas lights, the Roman tower donning a shimmering mantle each year and a large bauble welcoming the visitors at the castle’s entrance.
A handcrafted nativity scene comprising over 500 pieces is also placed among the centuries-old walls.
Themed, music and children’s programmes will be held during Advent, which kicks off on the first Sunday in December with a spectacular light switch-on that is attended by several thousand visitors. This year’s Advent will feature 17 different programmes, with two separate New Year’s Eve celebrations taking place atop the city, a children’s party with a plethora of decorations and entertainers and an evening event boasting an awe-inspiring view of the city. There will be five Advent booths at the market, offering holiday food and drinks, as well as different themes.
Advent on Gradina is a hotspot for Rijeka natives and a draw for numerous visitors from the entire region.
