Ever since people started doing business, they used to gather in various ways. Contrary to vacation tourism, business tourism includes any form of travel aimed at performing business activities: from individual business trips and various business or science conventions to stimulating travels, fairs, etc. This type of tourism is often referred to as MICE: meetings, incentives, congresses, exhibitions. The most recent term that includes all participants of this type of tourism is meetings industry.
Although the business industry is one of the selective types of tourism, experts agree that it rather refers to doing business than to the conventional type of tourism.
Eurostat, EU Statistical Bureau, officially distinguishes the following types of business meetings: corporation meetings, congresses, public conferences, government conferences, public meetings, conventions, incentive trips, team building programs, and other gatherings. Meetings are organized by private companies and corporations, or various associations: scientific, professional, political and other associations. The most common purpose of meetings is the exchange of information, education, promotion and sale, and business networking. One of the recent forms of the product is incentive trips, by which companies award and motivate their employees or business partners organizing a trip and business activities in new or exotic destinations.
