The statue of Our Lady of Loreto in Primošten

The Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto is one of many, old, black Madonnas found in the world. Her image was brought to Primošten in the first half of the 19th century and since then Our Lady of Loreto has been venerated as the patroness of the entire Primošten population and celebrated every year in the parish church of St. George.

The shrine of Our Lady in Loreto, Italy, is one of the best known Marian shrines in the world. Considered miraculous, the image of Our Lady was brought to Primošten from Loreto and has protected the people of Primošten ever since.

The statue of Our Lady of Loreto located on top of the hill Gaj is a symbol of devotion to the Blessed Mary and confirmation of close ties between Croats and Loreto.

The Agreement of friendship and cooperation signed in September 2011 by the towns of Primošten and Loreto has made the ties stronger. A year after the signing of the Agreement, the demanding construction of the statue of Our Lady was started. It was completed and opened to public in May 2017 in honour of Our Lady of Loreto. The statue is 12.5 metres high and with the adjoining stairway reaches the height of 17.5 metres.
