On the west side of the valley in which Ogulin is situated, there dominates a mountain of a marvelous form and daunting beauty, the extreme northeast ridge of Velika Kapela – the mountain Klek, 1,181 meters high. Klek is a destination for many hikers, mountaineers, botanists, travel writers and nature lovers.
Its 200-meter high, vertical cliff represents the cradle of Croatian mountaineering and alpinism because it was right here in Ogulin in 1874 that the idea of establishing a mountaineering association emerged.
Klek is one of the botanical reserves with a rich site of tertiary flora extensively preserved, and it is interpreted by the Klek educational botanical trail that is found alongside the hiking trail. An international footpath through the emerald heart of Croatia also passes over Klek – the green line of the Via Dinarica which stretches over a route from Kamačnik to Plaški.
Welcome to the path through the emerald heart of Croatia – the green line of the Via Dinarica which stretches over a route from Kamačnik over Klek and Modruš all the way to Plaški.
